More Than 6,000 Patients Seriously Injured By NHS Medical Negligence

Recent media reports claim that NHS medical negligence is happening on a regular basis. Shockingly, a patient is treated every 90 minutes following serious NHS medical negligence.

The report found that more than 6,000 incidents of medical negligence were recorded last year, which is 3 times the number of reported incidents of NHS medical negligence during 2005. Of the 6,000 incidents, injuries included accidental cuts and punctures to the body.

Such incidents are entirely unacceptable. It is very concerning that the number of incidents of medical negligence continue to rise, while the number of trained medical professionals continues to fall. If the current trend continues, the NHS will be in crisis. Arguably, it already is.

As NHS medical negligence solicitors, our only concern is patient safety. Our experts solicitors have found for many years that poor staff training and being understaffed are the most some of the most common reasons for medical negligence. It is very worrying that this trend has not been reversed.

What Are The Reasons Given For NHS Medical Negligence?

The reason given by the NHS for these incidents of negligence were:

  • Poor Staff Training
  • Inadequate Staffing Levels

We have often stated that the most common causes of medical negligence relate to staff being poorly trained and staff shortages. This is completely unacceptable, as the reasons given are entirely avoidable and preventable. We have provided guidance here.

NHS patients contribute a vast amount of money to the NHS through their taxes. At the very least, patients must receive an acceptable standard of care from properly trained staff. If a patient is not provided with an acceptable level of care, this is likely to amount to NHS medical negligence.

Any incident of negligence is unacceptable at law. If the reason given for negligence is poor staff training and/or a lack of staff, the patient has been seriously let down.
